Dr. Nizar Abdulateef is a Professor and Consultant in Internal Medicine & Rheumatology. He works in Rheumatology Unit, Department of Medicine, Baghdad College of Medicine; & in Rheumatology Clinic, Baghdad Teaching Hospital, Medical City, in Baghdad, Iraq. He studied medicine at Al-Mustansirya University, graduated in 1991, fellowship of IBMS in Internal Medicine in 1999 & fellowship of IBMS in Rheumatology in 2003. He is the President of Scientific Committee of Iraqi Board of Rheumatology and the Iraqi Board of Physical Medicine and Medical Rehabilitation and a supervisor on postgraduate studies in Internal Medicine in Iraqi & Arabic Board.. He is President of Iraqi League for Bone & Joint Health, President of Pan Arab Osteoporosis Society (PAOS) & Head of its Scientific Committee, Secretary General of Scientific Committee of Arab League of Associations for Rheumatology (ArLAR), & Member of Asian Pacific League Against Rheumatism (APLAR). He had more than 60 research in field of rheumatology, immunology & osteoporosis, most of them were published in international & local medical journals. Also, he had around 25 papers & abstracts which were accepted in international & local conferences. He is a reviewer of various journals including International Journal of Rheumatology, Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal, Journal of Faculty of Medicine Baghdad, & The Iraqi Journal of Pharmacy Sciences. He received frequent invitations as a speaker in national and local rheumatology events. In 2013, he received an award of Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education & Scientific Research in field of biological sciences & many thanking from Iraqi Ministry of Health. 

Dr.  Mahdi Abusalameh

Consultant Rheumatologist and Physician at Royal Devon and Exeter University hospital, UK

Mahdi Abusalameh is a consultant rheumatologist and physician at Royal Devon and Exeter University hospital, UK. He is experienced in musculoskeletal and large vessel vasculitis ultrasound and has tutored at several meetings and workshops. He is principal investigator of several studies on large vessel vasculitis. Dr Abusalameh has a special interest in inflammatory arthritis, GCA and PMR. In 2017 he established and has been leading the Exeter GCA fast track pathway incorporating the use of ultrasound.
He is the training program lead for general internal medicine in Exeter and is working with the Royal College of Physicians London as an MRCP examiner. He is a member of the British Society for Rheumatology.

Dr. Nasra Al-Adhoubi

Consultant Rheumatology, MD, FRCP – Royal Hospital. Muscat, Oman

Dr Nasra Al Adhoubi is working as a consultant rheumatologist at Royal Hospital since 2012. She graduated from Sultan Qaboos University, College of Medicine in 2002 and completed her   Residency in Internal Medicine in 2010. Following that, she travelled to the United Kingdom for further Speciality training in Rheumatology. Where she worked at Bart’s and London Hospital and got involved in doing scientific research. She is also certified in doing Musculoskeletal Ultrasound. She has a special interest in connective tissue diseases and specifically in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. She is a member of many national and international medical and rheumatological societies.

Dr. Soad Hashad

Consultant pediatric rheumatologist and one of the founders of pediatric rheumatology O.P.D in Tripoli Children Hospital since 2008.

She is the head of one of the only two pediatric rheumatology O.P.D in Libya and the O.P.D accepts cases from the whole country and she trained in it a couple of doctors in pediatric rheumatology. She is also the head of general pediatric unit in the hospital and an associate professor in the faculty of medicine in the University of Tripoli teaching fifth year students and she was chosen this year to be the general training supervisor for the Libyan board program in Tripoli Children Hospital by the Libyan council of medical specializations. She is a member in a couple of organizations like the Pediatric Rheumatology European society and the pediatric rheumatology international trial organization for which she was chosen as the national coordinator in Libya. Chafia Dahou Makhloufi has been a professor of rheumatology since 2006. She is the head of service at the Bab El Oued University Hospital, Mohamed Lamine Debaghine in Algiers.
She graduated in rheumatology at the Faculty of Medicine of Algiers in 1986 and has been practicing at the Maillot Hospital since 1987. Prof. Khalid Alnaqbi

Dr. Khalid Alnaqbi holds multiple positions as a Consultant and Head of Rheumatology and Immunology (Al Ain Hospital, UAE), Assistant Professor (UAE University), Vice President of Emirates Society for Rheumatology, examiner for the Arab Board of Internal Medicine, and faculty of Internal Medicine and Family Medicine residency programs in Al Ain.
He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), a Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology (FACR), and a Fellow of the RCPSC (FRCPC). He is a member in the Assessment of Spondyloarthritis International Society (ASAS), and the Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (GRAPPA). Dr. Alnaqbi graduated from the College of Medicine and Health Sciences, UAE University. Dr. Alnaqbi established 4 specialized clinics in Al Ain hospital: Early Arthritis Clinic, Connective Tissue Disease Clinic, Spondyloarthritis Clinic (the first in the Gulf), and Rheumatology Nurse Clinic in addition to the General Rheumatology Clinics. The rheumatology programs received the first accreditation by the Joint Commission International (JCI) outside the USA.

Thierry Thomas is a Professor of Medicine and Head of the Rheumatology Department at the University Hospital of Saint-Étienne (UHSE), France. He is also a member of the INSERM Unit 1059, the Integrative Biology of Bone Tissue Laboratory. Professor Thomas obtained his medical degree at the University of Saint-Étienne, before specializing in rheumatology and completing a PhD at the University of Lyon, France. After a research fellowship in endocrinology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, USA, he joined the faculty at UHSE in 1998, and assumed his current position in 2002. Professor Thomas is an active member of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) and the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases (ESCEO).  He is the Past-President of the National College of Academic Teaching in Rheumatology (COFER) and the current President of the French Society of Rheumatology (SFR). Yannick Allanore is Professor of Rheumatology at the Paris University since 2008. Professor ALLANORE is the Head of a research group working on the cardiovascular aspects of systemic sclerosis through clinical research programs and basic research ones, including genetic and cellular biology approaches (INSERM U1016, Cochin Institute). The team has also established a platform of SSc related animal models allowing the investigations of therapeutic candidates on the various aspects of the disease using complementary mouse models including the Fra2 and TNF-alpha transgenic mice that develop lung fibrosis and pulmonary hypertension.

He has published over 390 papers in peer-review journals. Professor Allanore is a member of several professional bodies, including the French Rheumatology Society and the American College of Rheumatology. He has been the elected chairman (2013-2019) of the EUROPEAN Scleroderma Trials and Research group (EUSTAR) and is now member of the steering committee of the World scleroderma Foundation. His first clinical and research interests focused on inflammatory joint disease and Sjögren’s syndrome. Professor Christophe Richez is a French Rheumatologist and specialist in clinical Immunology. He is the Head of the reference center of rare systemic autoimmune diseases in Bordeaux and is currently involved in the Club Rhumatismes et Inflammation (CRI) as President.

The CRI proposes regular updates of practical fact sheets dedicated to the management of patients with rheumatic diseases, treated with targeted drugs.

Professor Richez organizes for EULAR every 2 years the Immunology course, this year in Berlin.

Over the last 10 years, he has mainly worked on the role of innate immunity in the pathophysiology of autoimmune diseases, with a particular focus on the involvement of Toll-Like receptors (TLRs 4, 7 and 9) and Interferon Regulatory Factors (IRFs 5 and 7) in the inappropriate production of type I interferon, the platelet/plasmacytoid dendritic cell interaction in this overproduction, and the role of mitochondrial DNA in the activation of neutrophil polynuclear cells in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

He is pursuing this translational research on innate immunity within UMR CNRS 5164 of the University of Bordeaux, with work on the involvement of selectins and soluble FasL in several systemic autoimmune diseases.

He has also participated in his team's work on the role of follicular T cells in the pathogenesis of lupus, and other systemic autoimmune diseases.

His academic clinical research focuses on new strategies to manage rheumatoid arthritis patients, with the recent obtaining of 2 national funding. He also participated in several clinical trials, mostly in systemic lupus.

The last one was published in the NEJM: Trial of Anifrolumab in Active Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. N Engl J Med. 2020 Jan 16;382(3):211-221.

Prof. René Rizzoli is an internist and endocrinologist, with a subspecialty focus on metabolic bone diseases, osteoporosis and disorders of mineral metabolism. He is presently emeritus professor of medicine at the University Hospitals of Geneva, former head of the service of bone diseases. Dr. Rizzoli is the former chairman of the Committee of Scientific Advisors of the International Osteoporosis Foundation. He is the chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis, and co-chairing the scientific program committee of the annual IOF-ESCEO congress. At IOF, he is board member and treasurer. He used to be involved in both basic and clinical research projects investigating hormone action, regulation of bone growth, pathophysiology of osteoporosis and of calcium and phosphate homeostasis disorders, and the role of nutrition, calcium, protein, bisphosphonates, selective estrogen modulators, parathyroid hormone, denosumab and strontium ranelate in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Prof. Christopher Edwards

Professor Edwards is a Consultant Rheumatologist and Associate Director of the Southampton NIHR Trust Clinical Research Facility within the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS), having previously worked as a consultant at Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore.  Professor Edwards trained with Professor Maini at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology during the early years of anti-TNF trials and with Professor Graham Hughes at the St Thomas’ Hospital Lupus Clinic in London. As Associate Director of the Southampton NIHR Trust Clinical Research Facility he is engaged with the running of a large translational research facility with phase I experience.  Professor Edwards is Clinical Director of the Southampton Musculoskeletal Research Unit, a EULAR centre of excellence.  Through this work Professor Edwards is an investigator for a number of stratified medicine trials to better understand the targeting of therapies for individuals.  Professor Edwards has served as a member of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) Standing Committee on Musculoskeletal Imaging and currently Leads the Trainees Classroom of the EULAR School of Rheumatology. He has worked extensively with the General Practice Research Database (GPRD) to define the RA patient experience across the UK. The Southampton Lupus Clinic has recently been recognised as a Lupus UK Centre of Excellence.

Dr. Carlo Francesco Selmi

Dr. Selmi received his MD in 1998 and his PhD in Internal Medicine in 2002, both from the University of Milan. He was appointed Assistant Professor by the same University for Internal Medicine in 2006 and for Rheumatology between 2011 and 2019. As of 2019, he is Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at Humanitas University in Milan. In 2004 he was awarded the Young Researcher prize by the Italian Society of Internal Medicine and in 2005 the Young Investigator Award by the Aesku-Kipp Foundation. Dr. Selmi was a post-doctoral researcher between august 2001 and December 2004 at the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy, and Clinical Immunology of the University of California, Davis School of Medicine. Between July 2005 and December 2014, he was appointed Assistant Adjunct Professor of Medicine by the same Division at UC Davis.

Carlo Selmi currently leads the Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology Unit at Humanitas research hospital. At Humanitas he leads a young group of physician scientists with wide research and clinical expertise, including periods working at foreign institutions. The team holds dedicated clinics for rheumatoid arthritis, spondylarthritis, connective tissue disease with dedicated clinics for systemic sclerosis and systemic lupus erythematosus, and is active in articular ultrasound, video capillaroscopy, arthrocentesis and intra-articular injections.

He has coauthored over 300 peer-reviewed publications with a Scopus H index of 55 and a total impact factor exceeding 2000. His research track is dedicated to organ-specific and systemic autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases, including the clinical epidemiology and pathogenetic mechanisms of autoimmune liver disease, connective tissue disease (particularly systemic sclerosis), and psoriatic arthritis. Kanis is Emeritus Professor in Human Metabolism, and Director of the Centre for Metabolic Bone Diseases (Formerly WHO Collaborating Centre), University of Sheffield, UK and Professorial Fellow at the Catholic University of Australia (Melbourne).  He is the current President of the International Osteoporosis Foundation, member of its Committee of Scientific Advisors and Chairman of the Working Group on Epidemiology and Quality of Life. Prof. Kanis’ research interests are largely related to disorders of skeletal metabolism including osteoporosis, sarcopenia, Paget's disease of bone, hyperparathyroidism, renal osteodystrophy and neoplasia affecting the skeleton. Contributions to research include cell biology, histomorphometry of bone, assessment and treatment of bone disorders, guideline development, health technology assessment, epidemiology, regulatory affairs and health economics. He is the Editor in Chief of Osteoporosis International and Archives of Osteoporosis, and serves on the editorial board of several journals. He is the author of more than 1000 papers, chapters and books on bone disease and metabolism. His current major interest is in the development of risk assessment algorithms and the formulation of practice guidelines in many regions of the world.

Professor Jawad is originally from Baghdad, Iraq. He has published widely: 3 books, chapters in several books and more than 220 articles in learned journals. He has won several research grants investigating the role of cytokines on bone in rheumatoid arthritis and runs a metabolic bone service. He Is MRCP (UK) clinical examiner and external examiner for Sultan Qaboos University College of Medicine and Health Sciences. He was director of medical and dental education at Barts Health NHS Trust, RCP associate international director for the Middle East and North Africa and external examiner for MB BS at UCL.
